GENOMIC TESTING

Breeding evaluation, which results in EBVs, combines performance data, pedigree data and genomic data (if available) to predict the likely genetic make up of future progeny.

In 2022, Tangihau adopted genomic testing meaning from 2023 all sale bulls will be genotyped bulls. Genomic testing is an advanced management tool which maximises profitability. It aids breeding direction and assists selection strategy within a herd by increasing the accuracy and reliability of EBVs.

The DNA is extracted from tissue samples (ear punch), hair follicles, semen or blood. The genomic testing verifies parentage and identifies which DNA segments have been passed from the parents to their offspring. The genotype is then analysed to assess a bull's breeding merit in relation to a particular breeding trait e.g. birth weight, growth, milk production etc.
